Can't install vim - Windows 7 x64
So I installed SUA, the SDK, and the x64 complete bundle. Everything went relatively smoothly. I noticed I had vi, but not vim, so I figured for my first exercise I would add that.

Re:Can't install vim - Windows 7 x64
The link to the 32-bit version of vim does exist (as you note) and it is in the list file to show it's there.
The error output shows the right spelling and all that. The vim package has several dependencies so there's not a "download this one file instead" workaround. And it seems to be working for me. Can you do a "pkg_update -Lv vim" please? The 'v' is for verbose of course and that output may provide a clue to help resolve the issue. thanks. |

Here you go. For some reason it seems like it really can't find it:

Re:Can't install vim - Windows 7 x64
I'm having the same problems here at work:
~> pkg_update -Lv vim adding file list file "/tmp/tmp_AAAAAAAMV" Starting checks for updates opening file list file "/tmp/tmp_AAAAAAAMV" read line: "vim" basename: "vim" Going to check for available update to "vim". getting package by ftp get ftp info: ftp://ftp.interopsystems.com pkgs/3.5-x86 vim package not at ftp site pkg_update: Cannot find package 'vim'. closing file list file Done. ~> ftp http://ftp.interopsystems.com Connected to http://ftp.interopsystems.com. 220 ProFTPD 1.2.9 Server (Interop Systems FTP Server 1) [ftp.interopsystems.com] 331 Password required for oeffner. 230 User oeffner logged in. Remote system type is UNIX. Using binary mode to transfer files. ftp> ls 227 Entering Passive Mode (64,235,106,194,14,184). 200 PORT command successful 425 Unable to build data connection: Connection timed out ftp> Our IT staff has looked at the firewall log on my machine and noticed that http://ftp.interopsystems.com tries to make random port connections other than port 20 and 21 to my PC which the firewall then bars. We can only make passive mode ftp connection and maybe that's a clue as to why ftp to http://ftp.interopsystems.com doesn't work. Does http://ftp.interopsystems.com only allow active ftp connections? Re:Can't install vim - Windows 7 x64
Just for clarity. The other thread about ftp (IP lookup) is on Interix/SFU 3.5 only and is a different issue then this one.

Re:Can't install vim - Windows 7 x64
The FTP site does passive mode.
For pkg_update the default mode of ftp is initially used. The default is to try to make the connection 'passive' with a fallback to 'active'. If the connection can't happen then pkg_update next tries to connect with 'active' first. Then 2 other combinations are tried. That order of attempts seems to help getting through from some sites. With ftp you can test 'passive' only using the '-p' option or the env var FTPMODE="passive". Rob:: if you do an "ftp -p somesite" is some other random port still getting opened for you ? thanks. |

Re:Can't install vim - Windows 7 x64
Rob:: Sorry, another question.
When you do "ftp -p somesite" do you get prompted for the username/password? If so, do you get the "ftp>" prompt after that? Trying to narrow it down. |

Re:Can't install vim - Windows 7 x64
Sorry but it seems that the firewall at my work is also causing problems I think. I tried doing ftp -p somesite. From my work this shows the same behaviour as when accessing http://ftp.interopsystems.com. I can connect but not list files. Works fine from my home PC. The firewall log on my home PC shows connection to port 21 on the remote site and the remote site does not appear to open random ports on my PC.
I'm a bit confused by it all but need to get some sleep now. rob |
